Doctors of Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital will treat elders in the newly opened geriatric care center at Urban Primary Healthcare Centre, Fatehpur Beri, Delhi. The facility, named Age Friendly Health Services, has been opened by the Department of Community Medicine, Safdarjung hospital.

The center runs six days in a week and operates from 10 am to 12:30 pm. On Thursdays, those who need treatment in hospital will be referred to Safdarjung hospital. A dedicated person will help elders in the hospital. Treatment will be provided by junior and senior residents and interns of the department of community medicine.

The centre will focus on catering to the needs of patients above the age of 60 years. The services are modeled around patient oriented care with emphasis on geriatric empowerment, proactive and timely care, risk stratification, comprehensive assessment with co-ordination and continuity of care.

“This is a unique facility. It will help senior citizens who often find it hard to get treatment due to poor accessibility. Treatment of diseases such as respiratory, diabetes, hypertension and abuse will be emphasized,” said Prof Jugal Kishore, HOD, Department of Community Medicine.

“Services provided will include screening for depression, elderly abuse, cardiovascular risk and anemia, assessment of nutrition, respiration, hearing and vision with special emphasis on counseling and health education,” said Prof Kishore.

“One of the principles of primary health is equitable distribution of health services and providing more services where more are needed. We believe that the geriatric population is one such area where we have to concentrate our efforts,” explained Prof Kishore.
