Govt. forms panel to suggest medical device rules

India’s Health Ministry has constituted a Medical Devices Technical Advisory Group that will advise the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) on matters related to regulation of medical devices.

The group will examine issues relating to implementation of Medical Device Regulations. The group will suggest to CDSCO strengthening of Medical Devices Regulations in the country including Make in India, and Ease of Doing Business.    

The group will be headed by Dr S Eswara Reddy, Drugs Controller General of India. Dr Reddy is the chairperson of the group while Dr Naresh Sharma, Deputy Drugs Controller of India, is the member secretary of the group.

The group has 22 members including Dr Sandeep Bansal, HOD, Department of Cardiology, Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, Dr SN Bhattacharya, Prof. and Head, Department of Dermatology, University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi, and Dr Arjun Ahuja, Prof. and Head, Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai.

The group includes members of Department of Science & Technology, National Institute of Biologicals, Indian Council of Medical Research, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Defense Research and Development Organization, Bureau of Indian Standards, Department of Electronics and Information Technology, National Health System Resource Centre and Haryana’s State Drugs Controller.

The group includes representatives from Confederation of Indian Industry, Medical Technology Association of India, Association of Diagnostic Manufacturers of India, Association of Indian Medical Device Industry, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and American Chamber Commerce in India.

Meetings of the group will be called by the DCG (I) at least once in four months at CDSCO office, New Delhi.

The Health Ministry has also sought representations from all associations and government departments through nominating name, designation, contact and email id of their representative.
