Forensic dental evidence has convicted many to death: Prof Verma

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
Forensic dental evidence has sealed the fate of many death-row convicts, including in the Nirbhaya gang rape and Kothkai rape case mysteries, says Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Vice-chancellor I.P. University and Past Director-Principal of the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS).

Prof Verma was speaking at the 17th national conference of Indian Association of Forensic Odontology in New Delhi where over 300 delegates from India, Nepal and Australia are participating.

He said forensic dentists have helped identify victims in Tsunami, Mangalore aeroplane crash, Nepal earthquake and many other incidents.

Hence, the scope of this profession is tremendous and there is an urgent need to revamp forensic services in the country to address many developing issues, Prof Verma pointed out.

Dr Sangeeta Talwar, Director and Principal, MAIDS, said, “The institute receives around 150 cases for age estimation of offenders in different crimes annually along with many cases of bite mark investigation and has been working closely with other forensic experts in Delhi along with the legal system presenting dental expert evidences to the judiciary to assist in scientific evidence.”

Dr Talwar claimed that a trained forensic dentist can carry out identification of the deceased (to include the mass disaster situation), bite mark analysis, abuse related issues, lip print analysis etc. using various methods of investigations by partnering with teams.

Dr. Augustine. J, Organizing Secretary of the conference said that more than 175 scientific works from across the country were presented and there was discernible keenness to pursue this field by dental professionals.

He informed that the highlights of this conference have been 6 invited International speakers, and most importantly, partnering with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

Meanwhile, Justice R K Gauba from Delhi High Court realized the skills of dentist and praised their ability to work in close proximity with such finesse.

He said that the forensic dentists need to work with precision and commitment as integral members of the forensic team.
