Plant based diet helps in rheumatoid arthritis

 DTMT Network
A new review conducted by researchers of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington-DC has revealed that intake of a plant-based diet can help individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

The review disclosed that plant based diet including fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes reduce level of inflammation triggered by rheumatoid arthritis.

The review authors cite a study from 2015 that revealed that participants who had a plant based diet for two months had lower inflammation than those who ate a diet that was high in fat and featured more animal products.

The team noted that the additional study has found a link between adherence to diets high in fat and processed meat and a rise in markers of inflammation. One of these markers is C-reactive protein, a protein present in the blood, and one which reacts to inflammation.
Another study that the review looked at showed individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, after following low fat vegan diet for four weeks, saw significant improvements in symptoms including joint pain, stiffness, tenderness and swelling.

Dr Hana Kahleova, Co-Author of the study, said that this study offers hope that with a simple menu change, joint pain, swelling and other painful symptoms may improve or disappear.
