Delhi’s Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH) has started open heart and bariatric surgeries. The hospital has also set up a new state of the art 16-bedded ICU, OT complex and commenced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) facility.

A heptatobiliary, bariatric and metabolic surgery centre has been set up where bariatric surgeries will be conducted.

These services will be formally inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on October 24, 2019.

With the starting of open heart surgeries and ERCP, the RGSSH has become only the second Delhi government hospital after GB Pant which provides these super specialty treatments.

These new treatment facilities will provide major relief to patients who are often referred to bigger hospitals such as AIIMS and other private hospitals. The services will also benefit patients who fail to get them due to financial issues and go without treatment.

But in RGSSH, open heart surgeries and ERCP are conducted free of cost to the referred patients. Patients who come directly to the hospital are charged as per norms made by the Delhi government.

Dr Chhavi Gupta, Deputy Medical Superintendent, RGSSH, told DTMT: “These are world class facilities that we are providing to the patients. Under new facilities, open heart, ERCP and bariatric surgeries will be conducted. First open heart surgery was done on October 22, 2019, and next is expected to be conducted on October 24, 2019. We have also set up 16 bedded ICU which is equipped with modern equipment.”

Dr Gupta furthered informed, “We are also planning to conduct liver transplants in the next year and a half.”
