The Society of Young Scientists (SYS) of Delhi-AIIMS has alleged that research scholars have been discriminated against by the hostel administration in allotment of hostels.

SYS has accused the hostel superintendent of being biased while allotting hostels to resident doctors and neglecting research scholars. SYS President Lal Chand Vishwakarma has said that such discrimination by the hostel superintendent is not good for AIIMS campus. “Students should not be discriminated against on basis of course. Dictatorship of hostel superintendent is now beyond control,” he added.

In a letter to institute Director Dr Randeep Guleria, SYS has stated that several requests and reminders have been sent to the hostel superintendent but he is not ready to listen to any of their genuine complaints.

“He is exhibiting monopoly, arrogance and bias, especially with PhD and MSc students,” reads the letter.

The SYS has said that hostel section is allotting single room for married PhDs while allotting junior and senior residents 1 BHK type accommodation.

“Research scholars, whose tenure is extending beyond five years, are forcibly made to vacate the accommodation, which is against the earlier rule where hostel accommodation was provided till thesis submission and candidates whose thesis was submitted before five years were allowed to stay in hostel till their Viva,” said SYS in the letter.

The SYS stated that delayed thesis submission could be due to many reasons. "No research scholar would have an intention to extend or delay his PhD completion. Hostel accommodation must be there for these scholars in these tough circumstances" it added.

“With respect to these issues, if the hostel superintendent does not take fair decision, then we are left with no other option than to go on strike against hostel section to fight for our genuine demands,” said SYS.
