Safdarjung hospital asks HoDs for WhatsApp admin details

Amid rising tide of fake news on social media regarding COVID-19, the administration of Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, has asked all heads of departments (HoDs) to submit details of all admins of WhatsApp groups being operated by the hospital employees, for legal action.
In a circular, Dr Prem Kumar, additional medical superintendent of the hospital, says, "I'm directed by the competent authority that legal requirement names, mobile numbers, e-mails of all Admins of WhatsApp groups of hospital are required for onward transmission to police."
The circular reads, "This is required to prevent spreading of any fake news, rumours or any other adverse comments/statements on social media & in the institution by hospital/college staff."
"Therefore you are requested to submit all above details of the Admins of WhatsApp groups pertaining to hospital staff in my office," orders Dr Kumar.
Admins are liable for action under the Information Technology Act, the cyber crime law, and other laws in force at the time of the violation, as also the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
