BMC withdraws notice to doc for prescribing Covid-19 test

Amid widespread criticism from the medical fraternity across the country, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has withdrawn a show-cause notice issued to a Ghatkopar physician in Mumbai for recommending an asymptomatic patient to undergo Coronavirus swab test.
The notice sent to Dr Chetan Velani of Samadhan Healthcare Center said, “It has come to the notice of this office, based on reports of numbers of patients that, you have not been following the ICMR guidelines scrupulously, especially regarding the testing asymptomatic patients.”
The Assistant Commissioner of N Ward who issued the notice warns, “You are directed to show cause of the said violation noticed from your side and why your license should not be cancelled.”
The civic body has also threatened to cancel the doctor’s licence, in case he failed to respond to the contentious notice within 24 hours.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) which has come out in Dr Velani’s support said that the BMC cannot cancel the licence of any doctor. As per the rules laid down by the Indian Medical Council, only they are authorised to do so.
