The Indian Medical Association has demanded that the government should create an Indian Medical Service (IMS), on the lines of IAS and IPS, for super specialist doctors.

An IMA press statement has said that while the IMA has been actively carrying out its duties and responsibilities throughout the Covid epidemic, it has also provided major inputs for the Government of India for the betterment of a robust healthcare structure.

IMA national president, Dr Rajan Sharma, said, “The creation of the IMS cadre has become more relevant in the time of coronavirus, whereby doctors from various specialities can devise effective strategies for controlling the epidemic and improving the overall healthcare system in the future.”

“IMS will be able to bridge the gap between decision and deliverance, as well as be able to acknowledge and meet the many requirements of doctors who often work in extremely impoverished conditions," he said.

The Indian Medical Services has been the need during this present pandemic. A team of administrators with a strong medical background will be able to address the technical issues with more proficiency and fluency," Dr Sharma said in the statement.

Consistent counselling and interactions have been conducted in order to keep up the morale among the Indian Doctors. IMA has also maintained a National COVID Registry of doctors who have sacrificed their lives and those who have been infected in the line of duty, it said.
