Indian Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has informed that around 5 lakh people succumb to injury or disease due to lack of availability of organs every year in India.
Speaking at a National Organ Donation Day event in Delhi, Dr Vardhan said, “No age, caste, religion, community, belief should ever come as an obstacle in a task as divine as that of donating organs.”

“If a person below 18 years of age wishes to donate organs, he can do so with the consent of his parents or guardian. The goal of this campaign is to remove the fear of organ donation by spreading awareness through webinars, seminars and workshops and aiming at the root of the problem by granting acceptance to organ donation,” he added.

Meanwhile, to boost organ donation to save lives in critical times, 79572 personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force have pledged to donate their eyes, skin, lungs, heart, liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart valves and intestines after death.

This noble deed of the CRPF personnel is part of Collaboration between Organ Retrieval Banking Organization Delhi-AIIMS and CRPF that was launched in August 2020.
Director AIIMS Dr. Randeep Guleria spoke about the huge demand and supply mismatch and the importance of organ donation. He said that there are many myths that are prevalent in society which keep people away from donating organs and tissues. Dr. Guleria added that the common myths are related to certain religious beliefs, disfigurement of body, preferential allocation to rich and influential, person is too old to donate, person may come back from brain death, donor may be born without donated organ in next birth etc.

Prof. (Dr.) Aarti Vij, In-Charge, ORBO, Delhi-AIIMS, said that this year National Organ Donation Day was being celebrated to show our gratitude to those who had taken a pledge to donate their organs and tissues.

She spoke about the long association of CRPF with ORBO for the promotion of organ donation. Prof (Dr.) Aarti Vij thanked CRPF who protect the lives of our countrymen while they are alive and even while they are no more.
