Delhi-AIIMS has opened a separate burns and plastic surgery block for the public. This newly built facility, inaugurated by India's Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, will provide treatment to people who sustain burn injuries.

It is understood that the facility will also reduce a major burden of burn injuries on Safdarjung Hospital, which is one of the biggest health facilities for treatment of burn injuries in the national capital.

Dr Manish Singhal, Head of Burns & Plastic Surgery Department at the Delhi AIIMS, told DTMT, “This block is a milestone in the history of Delhi-AIIMS. AIIMS had all treatment facilities except burn care. Now we will treat patients with burn injuries too. This building has thirteen floors. These include laundry, ICU, OT, emergency, OPD, ward and private ward, X-ray, radiology and facility of infection control.”

Dr Singhal further said that this block has 30 separate ICU beds, 60 general beds and 10 private beds. "We have 6 operating theaters on 2 floors. These OTs have separate infection control facilities. Every ICU has separate room and ventilation. All the 60 wards are spacious. Emergency has 6 beds which can be expanded up to 20 beds if a situation arises.”

Dr Vijaydeep Siddarth, Project Officer, Burns & Plastic Surgery, Delhi-AIIMS, told DTMT that the ICU of this block is the best among all ICUs of the Delhi-AIIMS. Infection control has been the hallmark of this block. It is ensured that a patient does not spread infection to other patients, he added.

“This is a green building. It has been focused that environmental harms do not take place since the construction of this building commenced. If someone is not in the room, the lights will go off automatically. We can manage the temperature of different floors separately, which will save electricity,” said Dr Siddarth.

“Entire building has an LED light system. It is an environmentally friendly building and from the point of infection control, it is a state of the art facility which is essential for burn inflicted patients,” he added.
