The Indian Medical Association has criticized and put a series of questions to India’s Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan for openly supporting Coronil, an Ayurvedic drug launched by Patanjali’s Yog Guru Baba Ramdev on February 19, 2021.
The medicine was launched in presence of Dr Vardhan that enraged the IMA, which has already been battling with Central Council of Indian Medicine’s notification that allows Ayurveda practitioners to perform surgeries after training.
The IMA’s criticism has come after WHO’s recent tweet that WHO has not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment Covid19. Ramdev had claimed that it was the first evidence based medicine to treat Covid. This claim has been strongly objected to by the IMA.
IMA has said that Baba Ramdev claimed with the health minister that the said Coronil Ayurvedic medicine has got DCGI approval and WHO certification which has been denied by the WHO.
“All this happening was witnessed in person by Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who is a modern medical doctor by qualification. The WHO clarified in a tweet that it has not reviewed or certified the efficacy of Patanjali’s Covid-19,” said IMA in a press release signed by National President Dr JA Jayalal and Dr Jayesh M Lele, Honorary Secretary General, IMA.
The IMA has stated that the said false and fabricated projection of an unscientific medicine by the Health Minister to the entire country and being rejected by WHO is a slap and insult to the people of the country.
“This is a blatant deceiving of the people of the country. How can a drug be effective for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation from the disease? If Coronil is effective for prevention, why is the Government spending 35000 crores for vaccination? Is the Health Minister promoting CORONIL for prevention than the vaccine as Ayurveda may not prescribe vaccination for preventing a disease?” asked the IMA.
The IMA has said that the country needs an explanation from the minister. The doctors’ body has questioned the health minister how appropriate and rational it is to release such false projections in front of the whole country.
The IMA has asked Dr Vardhan how justified it is to release such falsely fabricated unscientific products to people of the whole country.
“Being a health minister of the country, how ethical is it to promote the product in unethical, wrong and false ways to the whole country. Being a health minister of the country and a modern medicine doctor, how ethical is it to promote the unscientific product to citizens of the country?" asked the IMA.
“Being a health minister of the country, can you clarify the time frame, timeline for the so-called clinical trial of this said anti-corona product promoted by you? Being a health minister of the country and a doctor, can you clarify the nature of clinical trials, if any, for the so-called clinical trial of this said anti-corona product promoted by you,”? asked the IMA.
