Covid positive report not must for admission: Govt.

The Indian Health Ministry has directed states and union territories that the requirement of positive test for Covid virus is not mandatory for admission to a Covid health facility. This will give major relief to suspected Covid patients who are denied admission due to lack of report.

These patients run from pillar to post for treatment in hospitals and even die without treatment. It has been observed in the second wave that many patients persist with Covid symptoms despite negative reports but they are left without treatment in absence of reports.

In an order issued to states and UTs by India’s Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, the ministry has said that no patient will be refused services on any count, which includes medications such as oxygen or essential drugs, even if the patient belongs to a different city.

“No patient shall be refused admission on the ground that he or she is not able to produce a valid identity card that does not belong to the city where the hospital is located,” reads the order.

“Admissions to hospital must be based on need. It should be ensured that beds are not occupied by persons who do not need hospitalization. Further, the discharge should be strictly in accordance with the revised discharge policy and available guidelines on the websites of the health ministry,” said the ministry.

“The chief secretaries of states and union territories shall issue necessary orders and circulars, incorporating these directions within three days which shall be enforced till replaced by an appropriate uniform policy,” it further added.
