AIIMS completes 1100 bariatric surgeries

The Department of Surgical Disciplines of Delhi-AIIMS has performed more than 1100 bariatric surgeries in the past 10 years.

The data was shared by the hospital during BARIME-National Postgraduate CME on Basics of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, which concluded on November 13, 2021.

The hospital said that it has a robust and well organized Bariatric Surgery Program. Over the last 10 years more than 1100 surgeries have been carried out in the Department of Surgical Disciplines, the country' most reputed medical institute innformed.

“Our team has published more than 50 research papers in this field in reputed international and national journals,” the hospital.

“One of our mandates is to impart knowledge and teaching to the medical community. This is all the more important in the field of Bariatric Surgery, where there is no program in most medical colleges and hence the trainees have no exposure to such an important field of surgery,” it added.

The CME was focused on the basis of Bariatric and Metabolic surgery as well as live operative demonstration of bariatric procedures.

The various lectures and operative demonstrations were planned in order to fulfill the knowledge gaps in PG curriculum.

The CME also highlighted the positive impact of bariatric surgery not only on weight loss but also several obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, sleep apnea and PCOD.

“Our team has recently published important papers on the impact of bariatric surgery cirrhosis and where we have shown reversal of cirrhosis in many cases. We also published showing that even some urinary problems incontinence get better after surgery,” said the hospital.
