DEHRADUN: Medical Lab Technicians have been demanding promotion, grade pay and formation of a cadre on the lines of health department-employed doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

The Uttarakhand Medical Lab Technicians Association has warned that its members will go on a statewide strike in all government hospitals if the state government fails to restructure their cadre on a priority basis.

Rakesh Rawat, President of the  Association said, “Pathologists are neither getting promotions nor salary hikes, which is why they are determined to shut all pathology laboratories in Uttarakhand and will not even allow private practitioners or medical students to work as interns in the laboratories."

There are a total 300 technicians in the state, most of them employed on contractual basis at Haldwani Medical College, Srinagar Medical College and Doon Medical College.

Laboratory technicians have demanded promotion, grade pay and formation of a cadre on the lines of health department-employed doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

The workers have pointed out that these long standing demands have not been met despite repeated assurances, forcing them to contemplate the strike action.

“All the government hospitals in the state have failed to employ 37 lab technicians as mandated by the MCI,” said Chandra Shekhar Sharma, general secretary of the association.

Sharma added, "The health department has been ignoring our demands."
