This year the Supreme Court has banned the sale of fire crackers in Delhi NCR before Diwali. The sale will recommence after Diwali, on November 1, 2017.

The Supreme Court on October 9, 2017, upheld the stay on the sale of fire crackers in Delhi-NCR to check level of pollution before Diwali. A bench headed by Justice AK Sikri has been quoted as saying “We should check at least one Diwali without burning of crackers.”

The court, however, ruled that sale of fire crackers will begin again from November 1, 2017. It may be noted that children had filed a petition before the apex court in 2016 to ban burning of fire crackers as this impacts the health of people due to pollution.

The petition was filed by kids from six to fourteen months of age. This was the first time when children had approached the apex court to ban the fire crackers. The SC banned the sale of fire crackers in 2016 after Diwali.

This year the court has banned fire crackers before Diwali, which will be celebrated on October 19, 2017. The level of pollution is found to have increased after Diwali every year.
