The Indian Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab governments over air pollution, and has given directions not to allow burning of crop stubble.

Hearing a petition over stubble-burning, a three-judge bench comprising CJI Deepak Mishra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud said that there is an emergency like situation in Delhi.

The bench added that apart from stubble burning, there are other factors, mistakes and carelessness which have led to severe air pollution in Delhi. “We cannot ignore pollution,” added the bench.

The petition sought directions to the central and state governments to curb road dust and stubble burning. The petition also sought effective implementation of the odd-even scheme in Delhi.
