Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2018, launched his government’s most ambitious healthcare scheme Ayushman Bharat by inaugurating a health and wellness center in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district.

Starting health and wellness centers is part of phase one of Ayushman Bharat. Second phase will have provision of Rs 5 lakh insurance cover to 50 crore poor people.

The government has aimed to set up 1.5 lakh wellness centers to provide treatment across the country under Ayushman Bharat by 2022. These health and wellness centers would mean a conversion of sub and primary healthcare centers.

“We have started the first phase of Ayushman Bharat today. In the first phase, we will try to bring big change related to primary healthcare across India. Under this we will convert 1.5 lakh sub centers and primary healthcare centers into health and wellness centers. We will complete this task by 2022,” said Modi.

"In these health and wellness centers, our focus will be on prevention of diseases like diabetes, cancer, hypertension, heart and respiratory problems. Under these centers, all efforts will be made to provide free diagnostics. These centers will work as family doctors for poor people. Now, our second target is to start the second phase of Ayushman Bhraat. Under this phase, we will provide Rs 5 lakh yearly insurance cover to around 50 crore people. We are working very fast on it," said the Prime Minister.
