The Professor in question will not guide any PhD student for three years.

PhD students at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences-Delhi have heaved a sigh of relief as Delhi-AIIMS has debarred a microbiology professor accused of mentally harassing one of her students.

The student, Rajat Prakash, had attempted suicide due to the harassment on March 25, 2018, at his Gautam Nagar residence in Delhi. This had triggered widespread anger among other PhD student who demanded strict action against the professor.

Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, Delhi-AIIMS, has said that the professor will not be guiding any student for the next three years. Dr Guleria said that all the PhD students who were pursuing their study under the professor, will be guided by other faculty members.

Prakash, in a letter to Director, Delhi-AIIMS, had claimed that Dr Urvashi Balbir Singh scolds him even when work is done correctly or without any mistake. He pointed out that even circumstantial shortcomings become his personal shortcomings in her view.

“My mental harassment is aggravated as she is not able to procure appropriate facilities, funds in the lab and makes no attempt to get the things done. Even the attempts made by me or someone else are ignored. I am looking forward to an immediate action on above to ensure no more loss of life of any other student,” Prakash had added.
