100 Indian districts now Filariasis-free: Nadda

NEW DELHI: India's twin strategy of eliminating possibility of new cases of Lymphatic Filariasis in the target endemic districts, and treating the existing ones, has paid off.

With the central Government's concerted efforts, 100 districts out of 256 endemic districts in India have achieved elimination target of Lymphatic Filariasis and stopped Mass Drug Administration (MDA) after successful validation by Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS), says India’s Health Minister J.P. Nadda.

Inaugurating the 10th meeting of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GAELF), in New Delhi on June 13, 2018,  Nadda said that significant progress towards Filariasis elimination has been made by India.

“India had adopted a new strategy to accelerate lymphatic filariasis elimination and the strategy is based on twin pillars of MDA once in a year for interruption of transmission, i.e no new case, and to cater to the patients already afflicted with the disease with morbidity management,” Nadda explained.

He stated that there is also an urgent need for total integration of different departments for mobilizing the community.

Cambodia, Cook Islands, Egypt, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Niue, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Togo, Tonga, Vanuatu - were awarded at the meeting on June 13, 2018 for eliminating LF.
