The suicide of Dr Smriti Laharpure, 32, at Madhya Pradesh’s Index Medical College (IMC)-Indore, over alleged demands of hiked fee after her admission in the college, has drawn criticism on the social media sites from doctors. They have demanded justice for Dr Laharpure.

Dr Laharpure was a final year PG student of Anaethesia. In her suicide note, Dr Laharpure held her HOD KK Khan, IMC chairman Mr Suresh Bhadoria and his management responsible for her death. She alleged that during counseling she was shown tuition fee Rs 8,55,000 and hostel fee Rs 2,00,000, but was asked to pay much more later.

She stated that after her joining the college , she a further Rs 2,00,000 was demanded of her as caution money that she arranged by taking loan and paid to the college administration. Meanwhile, the tuition fee was hiked from Rs 8,55,000 to Rs 9,90,000 and the college asked each student to pay Rs 1,35,000 more.

Dr Laharpure stated that paying this amount was beyond her imagination due to which she along with her colleagues approached the Jabalpur High Court. She said for that she was tortured for this.

Dr Ankit Om, Chairman, United Resident Doctor’s Association-India, has demanded justice for Dr Laharpure, adding that a young female doctor committed suicide due to the mafia operating in medical education sector and at IMC.

Dr Om adds, “We want justice and we must fight for her now. We all know that she was leading the case against IMC for all medical students. Payback time starts now. All medicos should come ahead.”

Dr Ayant Manglik, Former Intern, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, said, “It is not only the story of Dr Smriti. In fact, it is the story of every medical resident in India. It is just that some give in under the pressure and some keep fighting back. There is loss of peace in everyone’s mind. Whey residency is supposed to kill rather then make them learn?"
