Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has stood firm on his decision that all state government employees, including police personnel, will have to undergo dope test. The Chief Minister has, however, clarified that the employees who are found by the test to be taking dope will not be suspended or dismissed from service, but they will be treated. What is more, their identities will also not be revealed.

The Chief Minister said that common citizens who wish to kick the drug habit will also be provided treatment free of cost.

Mr Amarinder Singh defended his decision to have the dope test for all state government employees by saying that even the army conducts such tests.

Taking a meeting of senior officers on the subject, the Chief Minister instructed the Chief Secretary of Punjab to put in place a system of conducting the dope tests on all employees.

The Chief Minister also made it abundantly clear that the police DSPs, SPs and SHOs will be held responsible for tackling the menace of drug peddling in their jurisdictional areas.

It is hoped that the plan for drug tests and treatment, along with police action against drug peddling, will be able to tackle the drug menace in Punjab.
