Just three days after a senior orthopedic surgeon was assaulted in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, after the death of patient, another doctor serving in the emergency ward at Community Health Centre (CHC), Sadar, in the same district, has been attacked with a belt by a young boy, who claimed to be injured.

Dr Girdhari Lal said that he was abused and misbehaved with by the attendants of Rohit Kumar, 24, who wanted the treatment of his choice. Dr Lal said that Rohit came with his father Sanjay Kumar and some other people.

Rohit informed Dr Lal that he was injured and urged him for treatment as per his wish. But Dr Lal told Rohit and his father that treatment would be as per the disease that the patient suffers from, not according to their choice.

Both son and father pressurized Dr Lal for treatment as per their terms. As Dr Lal did not bow to them and started prescribing medicines, they attacked Dr Lal and Rohit took out his belt and attacked the doctor with it. Dr Lal was traumatized by their behavior. Other attendants with Rohit also created chaos in the CHC.

The situation became such that Dr Lal was forced to run away by the aggravated attendants who had come with Rohit.

Dr Lal, in a letter to the SHO of the area, has demanded action against Sanjay and Rohit who, he said, often create mayhem in the hospital.

Dr Vinay Kumar, President, Junior Resident Doctors Association, Patna Medical College, condemned the incident as shameful and said  that such attacks on doctors create atmosphere of fear among doctors due to which crack appears in the doctor: patient relationship.

Dr Ankit Om, Chairman, United Resident Doctors Association, said, “We will plan a medical bandh if the government does not become serious about the issue of assaults on doctors.”
