Doctors seek chief ministers' support on NMC

As the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill is likely to be presented any time in the ongoing Parliament session, doctors have sought support from chief ministers of various states against provisions in the Bill, including the provision of a bridge course for AYUSH doctors.

In separate letters to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the United Resident Doctors Association (URDA) has said that there are provisions in the Bill that promote private medical education by giving rights to regulate sixty per cent of seats to private medical colleges.

The URDA letter states that private institutes hike medical fee and sell the seats for Rs fifty lakh to Rs one crore per seat. This Bill will convert this loot into government approved loot. Recently, a medical student committed suicide at Madhya Pradesh’s Index Medical College just because she fought a court case against the arbitrary hike in fee by the medical college.

The doctors said that if NMC is implemented, the expensive medical education will impact both doctors and patients. They said that for paying Rs one crore fee they will have to take loan and for that they will continue to pay EMIs for years. This will impact patients as they will have to pay more money for the treatment.

Dr Manu Gautam, President, URDA, said that the motive behind sending letters to states’ chief ministers is to seek their support and inform that NMC bill is anti poor and anti-democratic. Dr Gautam said that doctors have been protesting against the Bill for the last six months but the government has not paid any heed.

Dr Ankit Om, Chairman, URDA, told DTMT, “We have sent letters to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and UP CM Yogi Aditya Nath. We are going to send fourteen more letters to CMs and will seek their support as we have sixteen state RDAs in states.”

Dr Om said that the NMC Bill allows crosspathy in which an AYUSH doctor can practice allopathy, which means that the patients will be at risk.
