NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has seized Rs 1.68 lakh worth of Buprenorphine injection vials that were being supplied to Delhi by a pharmacist from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. Buprenorphine is used as a painkiller and cheap alternative of opium by addicts.

Vineet Garg alias Bunty, who was arrested from his house in Aligarh, used to change the labels of vials and paste the name of a life-saving drug to prevent the police from checking the consignment.

Additional commissioner of police (crime) Rajiv Ranjan said, “Garg was part of an interstate syndicate that supplied pharma drugs used as cheap alternatives by addicts. The consignments would be brought to Delhi through UP and Madhya Pradesh.”

Garg, owner of the Bunty Pharma, had been procuring a large quantity of Buprenorphine through different courier companies in the guise of legal medicines. It was found that two such consignments were in transit through Madhur Courier of Delhi and Om Logistics of Aligarh.

“During investigation we found that the labels of only 11,000 vials were stripped off while the rest were hidden under them. The courier company was approached and it led us to to Garg,” Ranjan said.

The accused told police that he used to work at the medicine shop of his father after whose death he had to shut it down due to lack of a pharmacy licence. After this, he secured a medicine distribution licence and started Bunty Pharma.

Ranjan said, “In January two men approached him and proposed that he would be given a commission if he illegally supplied them certain drugs. On their instructions, Garg started removing the labels of Buprenorphine vials and supplied them through various courier companies.”
