NEW DELHI: Thousands of safai karamcharis working for the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi after 71 of their colleagues were suspended for obstructing sanitation work. These include 40 from Shahdara South, and 31 from Shahdara North.

Apart from the permanent staff, temporary staff too participated in the protest. Paramedics and other hospital staff were also participating in the protest.

Union leader Sanjay Gehlot told DTMT, “Every year, workers are promised that when the funds come in, they will be given their arrears and pensions. Enough is enough.”

He said that from October 9, 2018, the workers are planning to ‘gherao’ the EDMC office and have vowed not to allow officials to enter the office.

Many workers complain that they are not given any safety equipment when they enter the sewer and are often injured, inhale poisonous gases, and have consistent cough and chest pains. Funds need to be allocated for this work.

Residents from Seelampur, Welcome and all colonies from Shahdara to Laxmi Nagar, Vivek Vihar and Jhilmil Colony in East Delhi have been troubled by piles of garbage strewn around on roads.

The sanitation workers of EDMC had gone on strike on September 23, 2018, demanding payment of their monthly salaries without delay, timely pension for those who have retired from service, and proper medical assistance.
