The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Chief Secretary and DGP, Gujarat, over the death of a mother and her new born baby during a C- section surgery done by a drunken doctor in Sonawala hospital in Botad district.
The NHRC has observed that if the incident is true, it amounts to gross violation of the human rights of the victims. The commission has noted that doctors are always expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and devotion to their work.
"But in the instant case, it appears that the concerned doctor had shown carelessness and criminal negligence by performing the C-section of a woman in an inebriated condition," states an NHRC press note.
On November 28, 2018, the police arrested the doctor on the complaint of the victims’ relatives. His blood samples were sent for testing after he was found apparently drunk.
