Nursing students heaved a sigh of relief after lodging of an FIR by UP police against the Chief Proctor (CP) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) who allegedly slapped a nursing student demanding recognition of her BSc degree during a protest held recently in the BHU campus.

The information has been shared by former Delhi-AIIMS RDA president Dr Harjit Singh Bhatti whose help was sought by BHU nursing students.

Dr Bhatti said, “Finally the strong unity and struggle of nursing students of BHU succeeded in creating pressure on UP police to lodge FIR against the CP. Though FIRs have also been lodged against 125 nursing students who were protesting for degree recognition.”

Dr Bhatti informed “An enquiry panel will be set up in the case but we have strong video proof and medical records. This is the first step towards dignified educational environment in our universities and this struggle will continue till the CP gets punished for slapping BSc nursing students”

It may be noted that on November 29, 2018, BHU CP Royana Singh allegedly slapped nursing student Manju Kumari who along with other nursing students staged protest and demanded the recognition of their BSc degree by Indian Nursing Council.

Reportedly, the slap was so hard that Kumari sustained grievous injury (perforation) on her left ear drum and will have to undergo surgery. Kumari had earlier demanded from the Police Station In-Charge to lodge an FIR against the CP.

Kumari also claimed that her family was forced to withdraw the police complaint against the CP.
