March by Delhi-AIIMS research scholars for hike in remuneration

Around 200 research scholars of Delhi-AIIMS will shortly take out a silent candle march in protest against their fellowship payments not being hiked. The protest will be in the hostel premises of AIIMS. The research scholars said that till date there has been no positive response from the government for hiking their fellowship.
Mr Lal Chandra Vishwakarma, Chairman, Society of Young Scientists, said, “We hoped for a response from the government over hike in fellowship by December 20, 2018. Prof. K Vijay Raghavan has assured the hike in fellowship by December 2018. Till now, there has been no response from him. That is why we are holding a silent candle march.”
“This protest was pre-decided and just to respect the assurance of Dr Raghavan we have made it a silent protest. There will be a bigger protest if no concrete action is taken by the government in the matter by December. The bigger protest will be observed and supported by all researchers at Ministry of Human Resource Development to mount pressure on the government,” said Mr Vishwajeet Singh, General Secretary, SYS.
Mr Singh added that the motive of this protest is that government should promote and give due value to research. Fellowship is a part of giving value to research. This also relates to the mental status of research scholars. The Rs 25000 fellowship which is paid today is not enough, he said.

Mr Sonu Tyagi, Finance Secretary, SYS, said “Our fellowship should be regularly hiked with government norms. This will not allow researchers to go on roads for protest which affects their work. There is no need to undermine our work. Like doctors, we are also crucial for healthcare. It takes ten years to develop a vaccine which prevents patients from many diseases. Our issues and concerns need serious consideration.”
