Junior resident doctors, who are supposed to treat patients, sold Vada Pao, Chana Masala and fruits in Government Medical College, Aurangabad, as part of their silent protest against not getting their stipend for the last three months. The agitated doctors arranged various stalls to sell the food items in the college.

Around 1700 resident doctors of four districts including Nagpur, Aurangabad, Akola and Beed are protesting over unpaid stipend. Resident doctors of the entire Maharashtra state have not been paid stipend for the last three months.

The doctors said that due to lack of money the last three months have been worst affected in their lives. They informed that there are bleak chances of getting the stipend due to which they have to show their plight by selling these food items.

Dr Abdul Vakil Khan, President, Junior Resident Doctors Association, Government Medical College, Aurangabad, told DTMT: “We have not been paid salary for the last three months. So we are resorting to sell fruits, Vada Pao and Channa Masala to demonstrate how difficult is the life we are living. All the junior residents of Maharashtra are not getting stipend. This needs urgent attention of the government.”

In October 2018, the resident doctors had warned that they will come to the streets and block traffic from December 20, 2018, to show their protest in public over their issues including the demand for a hike in stipend and provision of TB leave. However, this warning was not taken seriously by the government.

The All India United Resident Doctors Association has issued a statement in New Delhi demanding from the state government that the problems being faced by the resident doctors in Maharashtra must be resolved soon.
