Amritsar: Surgery resident assaulted for not giving VIP treatment

Around five hundred junior and senior resident doctors have struck work in the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar, Punjab, in view of the assault on Dr Sachin Vardaan from the Department of Surgery of the Hospital.
Dr Vardaan was assaulted on December 29, 2018, by a patient and his attendants who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The doctors said that Dr Vardaan was treating the patient as per protocol but his attendants sought VIP treatment which complicated the situation.
The doctors said that Dr Vardaan has sustained injuries. The culprits threatened to kill the doctor if any complaint against them is made to the police.
“Dr Vardaan asked the name of another patient. At that time a heavily drunk patient and his attendants abused, slapped, manhandled and assaulted the doctor. Within minutes, the patient, along with relatives, ran away from the hospital,” said Dr Manpreet Singh, Core Committee Member of Resident Doctors Association, GMC.
Dr Singh told DTMT that junior and senior doctors are on complete strike. Emergency services are being run by consultants. Dr Singh said that doctors are discussing with the Principal and Superintendent of GMC but no concrete efforts have been made by them.
“We have decided that we will continue the strike unless culprits are put behind bars and proper security arrangements are made,” said Dr Amrit Pal Singh, Acting President, RDA, GMC.
