Maharashtra: Marginal increase in organ donations reported in 2018

Timely organ donation saved many patients' lives in Maharashtra in 2018. Around 136 organ donations felicitated 375 life saving transplants, including 200 kidney and 124 live surgeries, in the year. There were 133 organ donations in Maharashtra in the year 2017.

However, Mumbai reported just 48 organ donations, ten lesser than in 2017. But the first day January 1, 2019, started on positive note as two cadaver organ donations saved lives of four patients who were in dire need of organs for survival.

The state performed decently on conducting tissue donations. Around 141 skin and 600 cornea donations were conducted in 2018.

It may be noted that after Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra contributes the most to organ donations, including cadaver and living donations. The state was also awarded by India’s health ministry for promoting organ donations.

Around 5 lakh patients die in India in each year due to non-availability of organs. According to a report, only 301 hospitals can perform organ transplantation. Out of theses, 250 are registered with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization.
