Max Hospital Saket: Resident docs to go on strike over low stipend

Rohit Shishodia
The DNB and FNB Resident doctors working at Max Hospital, Saket, Delhi, have planned to go on strike from next week over non-payment of stipend as per guidelines of the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

The doctors have said that there exists a huge disparity in stipend paid to Resident doctors at Max Saket and the Residents in government hospitals.

They said that they are getting a stipend of Rupees 30,000 to 40,000 lesser than residents of government-run hospitals.  The NBE guidelines direct NBE accredited hospitals to pay a stipend to DNB anfd FNB residents equal to stipend paid to MD, MS, DM and Mch Residents by state governments and minimum prescribed by NBE or whichever is higher.

This stipend can be paid with addition of various allowances or as total sum. The doctors allege that this is not happening in Max Saket.

A DNB resident at Max-Saket who did not wish to be named told DTMT that after the 7th Central Pay Commission implementation in Delhi, DNB residents get from Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 lesser than residents in government hospitals. Junior Residents (DNB) in Max-Saket get from Rs 56,000 to 59,000 while in government Junior Residents are getting Rs 90,000 per month as stipend.

“Max hospital is interpreting fixation of stipend after 7th CPC in its own way. Residents pursuing FNB (super-specialty) get Rs 80,000; 82,000 and 84000 after 7th CPC in Max Saket. In government hospitals this stipend crosses more than Rs 1,10,000 and Rs 1,25,000. What game they are playing is that they are paying Rs 80,000 as basic pay but not including allowances,” said the doctor.

“NBE directs that there should be a periodic revision of stipend but that too is not happening here. They are just sticking to basic pay and do not hike it with allowances. If they continue to pay this stipend, then it will remain same for ten years. On the other hand, Residents in government institutes will get allowances,” added the doctor.

The United Resident Doctors Association-India has come out in support of the demands raised by the Resident Doctors of Max Hospital, Saket, for proper fixation of the stipend paid to them.
