45% increase in liver cancer patients in ILBS, Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (IBLS), Delhi, has said there was a 45% increase in footfall of patients suffering from liver cancer due to advance in imaging techniques like PET-CT and linear accelerator.

Director, ILBS, Professor Shiv K. Sarin told DTMT, “In the year 2018, a total of 107,000 patients were seen in the ILBS, in which 9000 were emergency patients, 7000 admissions, 4300 ICU admissions, 29000 day care procedures, 100 liver transplants and 31 renal transplants.”

Dr Sarin emphasized the concept of “Hepatocenterism” which means 'Liver at the center of the health care' –  liver is the cause of Diabetes and all non-valvular heart diseases.

Inaugurating the 9th Foundation Day celebrations of ILBS, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said government hospitals should adopt strategies from ILBS to make their systems more efficient.

The minister said that the health-care sector will have to find ways to operate more efficiently.

Jain appreciated that ILBS is setting an example for government as well as private institutions. He suggested that liver diseases and symptoms should not be neglected and should receive prime focus.

The minister laid stress on the importance of limiting sugar and fat intake in the diet to prevent fatty liver and diabetes and keep the liver healthy.
