NIMS surgeons leave scissors in patient's stomach

The renowned government super specialty hospital of Telangana -- Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is once again in the news, but for wrong reasons.

The goof up committed by doctors of the institute has caused a three months long ordeal of pain for a woman. The doctors performed a surgery on a 33 year old woman three months ago for treating her hernia problem. However, the doctors forgot the scissors used to perform the surgery in the stomach of the woman and stitched it.

The woman has been identified as Maheswari. Later, the victim was discharged from the hospital. Some 15 days after her discharge, she began to experience stomach pain. Unable to bear the pain, she approached the doctors of the hospital. The doctors performed different kinds of tests, including an x-ray of her stomach. The doctors found a pair of scissors in her stomach. This prompted the relatives of the victim to stage a dharna in front of the hospital demanding action against the responsible doctors. They also lodged a complaint with the local Panjagutta police against them. The doctors of the hospital immediately sprang into action after being reprimanded by the higher officials of the hospital and the state government and performed another surgery to remove the scissors.

Director of NIMS Dr. Manohar termed the incident as 'very unfortunate ' and added that no such incident was reported at the hospital in the last 30 years. “We have performed a surgery on the patient and removed the scissors. The patient is recovering now. Viewing the incident seriously, we have constituted a three member committee to find out the reasons behind the incident,” he said.
