Niloufer hospital: Junior doc assaulted, docs halt services

Around 80 resident doctors of Niloufer hospital in Hyderabad struck work after a junior resident doctor was assaulted by the uncle of a deceased baby late on on February 15, 2019 night. The doctors said the 10-month-old baby was brought to the hospital in a serious condition. The baby was suffering from protein-energy malnutrition with severe dehydration.
The post prognosis was explained to the parents of the baby. The doctors said that they had instructed the parents not to give any liquids or solids to the baby. But they gave the baby milk which deteriorated the condition of the baby.
This milk had reached the lungs of the baby from the stomach and he started aspiration. The baby was intubated but all efforts of the doctors were in vain and the child succumbed to death.
The doctors said that after the death of the baby, his uncle reached the hospital and assaulted the junior resident doctor. The doctor sustained bruises on his face. This assault did not go down well with resident doctors and PG students and they decided to strike work.
Niloufer hospital is associated with Osmania Medical College.
Dr PS Vijayender, President, Telangana Junior Resident Doctors Association, told DTMT: “Doctors had asked parents not to give any fluid or food but they gave the milk to the baby. The baby started aspiration. Milk came to lungs from the stomach. The doctors tried their best to save the baby. They intubated the baby but he could not survive.”
“After the death, the baby’s uncle came in an inebriated condition and he assaulted the first year resident of PG of Department of Pediatrics. He did not suffer from any grievous injury but he sustained bruises on his face. Following the incident, around 80 doctors struck work in protest against the assault,” added Dr Vijaynender.
