Maharashtra to recruit Unani graduates in wellness centers

DTMT Network
Graduates in Unani medicine will now provide their services in Maharashtra as mid level providers (MLPs) in health and wellness centers. The state government will appoint them after the central government gave the special sanction for the recruitment of Unani degree holders.

The Unani graduates will join graduates of Ayurveda to provide services in child birth, infant care, non-communicable diseases, mental health, oral and eye care. Before joining, the Unani graduates will have to qualify an exit exam. This exit exam has been opposed by doctors of modern medicine.

In Maharashtra, around 4000 sub-centers are to be upgraded to health and wellness centers in a phased manner by 2020. With this upgradation, there would be a need of more than 8000 MLPs. The salaries for the MLPs have been fixed at Rs 40,000, out of which Rs 15,000 would be paid based on performance of MLPs.

Mr Eknath Shinde, Public Health Minister, Maharashtra, informed that the state government got the proposal from the Center to recruit Unani-degree holders last week.

Mr Shinde added that this will help the government fill up 10000 posts in health and wellness centers to strengthen healthcare in rural areas of the state.

Mr Shinde said that the objective of appointing MLPs in health and wellness centers is to diagnose and treat various non-communicable diseases early so that cases of heart attacks and strokes can be brought down.

Dr Satish Pawar from the Directorate of Health Services, Maharashtra, said that the MLPs will only dispense and keep checking the condition of patients. Dr Pawar added that medicines will be prescribed by an MBBS doctor deputed at the center.
