Infertility rampant among couples in Delhi: Doctors

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
The number of couples suffering from infertility owing to disorganised lifestyle, unhealthy habits, and the growing incidence of diseases in Delhi has increased three times in the last few years. And, looking at the trend, the problem is only going to worsen.

Dr. Jyoti Bali, fertility specialist and Secretary, Delhi Chapter, Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR) said, "Infertility is becoming rampant even amongst young married couples. Earlier, there used to be one couple with infertility issues in ten couples and now the number has risen to many times that in the national capital.

Dr Bali, who is also Medical Director, Babysoon Fertility Centre, Delhi, was speaking on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction.

Dr Bali said, “The government data is insufficient to narrow down on the reasons for the infertility in Delhi itself. However, the number of infertility cases detected is high and could be attributed to the increased awareness.”

On the occasion, 14 health journalists from Delhi were conferred the Health Journalism Appreciation Award by Delhi Chapter ISAR. They include Garima Pankaj from Delhi Press, Sunita Kapoor from Amar Ujala, Arpana Gandhi from AIR FM GOLD, Prem Prakash from Jansatta, Bushra Khan from Rajasthan Patrika, Tarun Sisodia from Dainik Bhaskar, Rakesh Sharma from Punjab Kesari, Anjum Jafery and Nemish Hemand Sahu from Dainik Jagran, BS Rawat from Drug Today Medical Times, Shivendra Singh from Aaj Samaj, Faheen Ahmad from Virat Vaibhav, Iqrar Khan from Perfect Khabar, Hariom from Janmanch News, Owas Ansari from Shah Times and R P Dubey from Sajha Makshad.
