Benches in doctors' common room in IGMC

Human Rights Violations: IGMC docs petition NHRC

Rohit Shishodia
Disappointed over the Principal not addressing their problems including long working hours and lack of residencial facilities, the resident doctors of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, have sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The IGMC doctors have said that their human rights are being violated as they are deprived of basic facilities in hospitals as they sleep on benches and work 36 hours continuously.

“There is a common duty room for male and female doctors. Few benches are there in this common room. Doctors have to sleep on these benches. How can these benches be shared by male and female doctors for sleeping?" asked Dr Ajay Jaryal, President, RDA-IGMC, in a letter to the NHRC?

Dr Jaryal informed the NHRC that doctors have to work for 36 hours continuously which puts extra burden and causes various health problems to the doctors.

Dr Jaryal said that RDA-IGMC wrote 15 letters to the principal of IGMC to sort out these problems of the doctors. But no positive action has been taken by the college principal.
