Harried patients: No anti-rabies vaccine in GTB Hospital

Deserted Anti-Rabies Clinic at GTBH, Delhi.

Harried patients: No anti-rabies vaccine in GTB Hospital

Patients coming with animal bites to Delhi’s GTB Hospital are a harried lot due to non-availability of anti-rabies vaccines, a mandatory injection which has to administered to the affected person within two or three days. If the injection is not administered, the patient can succumb to death any time.

Shortage of anti-rabies vaccines at GTB Hospital has been reported barely a month after Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal dedicated the anti-rabies clinic at the hospital.

Shockingly, anti-rabies vaccines are not available in many of the hospitals run by the Delhi government. This was informed by a customer care executive on phone 1031, the Delhi government helpline number printed on boards at GTB Hospital.

The executive told DTMT: “You have to visit Safdarjung and RML Hospitals to get the vaccine. There is a huge shortage of anti-rabies vaccines. If you do not get them in Safdarjung and RML hospitals, you have to get it from outside.” Safdarjung and RML hospitals are run by the Central government.

Dr Amit, PRO, LNJP hospital, told DTMT that there is shortage of anti-rabies  vaccines in government hospitals but they are available in LNJP hospital.

The shortage of vaccines at GTB hospital has caused huge inconvenience to patients bitten by animals. The nurse deputed at the clinic informed that around 700 patients with animal bites visit the clinic. These patients have been advised to get vaccines from private clinics.

Must Watch :-

Left with no option, patients are returning without getting vaccinated which endangers lives as many of them are poor and can’t afford expensive vaccines. The first vaccine costs Rs 330 at private chemists while a total  of five vaccines have to be administered to the affected person. It is even more costly at private clinics, including doctors' fee and other charges.

Anti-rabies serum, which is costlier then vaccines, is also not available in many hospitals. Anti-rabies serum is administered for grave animal bites.

If anti-rabies vaccine is not administered within two days, it can take the life of a person. And if a person is affected with rabies, there is no medicine in the world which can cure rabies. Best period of administration of anti-rabies injection is the first twenty four hours.
