The Drugs Controller General of India Dr S Eswara Reddy has told DTMT that the final rules for regulating online pharmacies are almost ready and they are likely to be published after the general elections.

At present, there is no ban on online sale of medicines. Any chemist or pharmacist wishing to sell medicines online, can sell them online with valid sale license issued by a state drug authority. The matter pertaining to online pharmacy is still under the consideration of the Madras High Court.

The Madras High Court in December 2018 had stayed the ban on online sale of medicines till it delivered final orders. It may be noted that many chemist associations had struck work against online sale of medicines. They cited various reasons such as loss of business due to online sale and said that it poses serious health risks to the patients.

According to data, around 30 to 40 lakh customers order medicines from epharmacies. The online pharmacy rakes in revenue of s 100-150 crore per month.
