Hypertension, diabetes rampant in Telangana
Inkeshaf Ahmed
Hyderabad: Lifestyle diseases like diabetes and Blood Pressure (BP) have wreaked havoc on the people of Telangana state in India. The Non- Communicable Diseases (NCD) Survey being conducted by the state government has found that those above 30 years of age are affected by these lifestyle diseases.
The first phase of the survey was started in the state in the end of year 2017 in 11 districts of the state. The authorities of the health department have said that they have conducted requisite clinical tests free of cost on 32,02, 820 people of the state so far. Of these, 2,72,957 people have been found to be suffering from hypertension (Blood Pressure) and 1,69,051 people have been found to be suffering from diabetes. The authorities have said that they have already started treatment for all these patients.
In the first phase, the authorities have been able to cover 83 percent of the households of the state. They achieved 100 percent coverage in Siddipeta district of the state. The authorities have covered 90 percent of the houses in three other districts of the state.
The second phase of the survey was launched in February this year in another 11 districts of the state. According to the officials, they have conducted tests on 44 percent of the people above the age of 30 years in these districts so far. The third phase of the survey will be launched from the month of June, 2019.
The clinical tests which are being done free of cost on the patients are part of the central government’s national programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetes, cardio muscular diseases and stroke scheme. All the states of the country. including the Telangana, are conducting free tests under the scheme.
Interestingly, Telangana has secured the first place among the states which are conducting the survey at a fast pace. The union minister of health recently sent an appreciation letter to the state government praising its work . If we look at the nation wide figures, Kerala state has occupied the first place in the entire country with the most number of BP and sugar (diabetes) patients. However, Telangana is likely to surpass Kerala in the list very soon thanks to the growing victims of lifestyle diseases.
It is also found in the survey conducted in the state that 2.14 lakh people above 30 years have contracted BP for the first time in their lives. Among the districts covered in the first phase of the NCD survey Sangareddy district topped the list with the most number of BP and sugar patients followed by Siddipet district.
