Mass suicide threat by docs: United RDA petitions PM, CVC

Concerned over the threat of mass suicide by doctors of Delhi’s Bada Hindu Rao Hospital over non-payment of salary for the last three months, the United RDA-India, an all-India resident doctors’ body, has sought the urgent intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Vigilance Commissioner KV Chowdary in the case.
The Untied-RDA has sent separate letters to the PM and the CVC and urged them to direct concerned officials of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to pay the salary of doctors. In the letters, they have also sent our stories' link to the PM and the CVC that flashed the news of threat of mass suicide by unpaid doctors.
The doctors said that it is pertinent to note that NDMC has not cut back any expenses. The agency has fund for pavements, new recruits, contractors and councilors, but not to pay these hapless employees.
“Why councilors' local area development fund is being released when there is no money for salary? Whey are purchases being done and pavements are being made? Buildings are being constructed. Schools are getting funds. Medicines are being distributed free in hospitals? But there is no money for doctors' salary,” protested the doctors’ body.
The letter sent by Untied-RDA to PM and CVO reads, “We condemn the apathetic attitude of the authorities in this case. Salary has not been paid for over three months. This violates the Supreme Court instructions and the basic human right of these doctors. They have worked for this. They have right to livelihood.”
The letter further states, “The basic purpose of salary is to keep the body and soul together. For these children (junior doctors) who are from middle class, it is not possible to pay their rents, EMIs, children’s school fee, and their daily expenses if salary is not regularly paid.”
“We request you to take suo-moto action on the subject by summoning and penalizing the officials involved in this violation of basic human rights. Kindly give these young individuals hope that they have not worked hard to be ignored and mistreated,” adds the letter.
Dr Manu Gautam, National President, United-RDA, told DTMT: “Non-payment of salary, that too for the three months, is a big issue. This has resulted in financial crisis for the doctors. Almost 70% of resident doctors of Hindu Rao are non-residents of Delhi. Due to non-payment of salary, they can’t pay room rents, daily bus or metro fares, PG’s fee and any other daily bills. Those who are married can’t pay their children’s school fee.”
