LVPEI's run in Hyderabad for eye cancer awareness on May 19

DTMT Network
To spread awareness about eye cancer, also known as retinoblastoma, Hyderabad’s LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is organizing a mega 'Whitathon 2019 Run' on May 19, 2019 as part of World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week. The run is supported by Hyderabad Runners Society.

People would be educated by top ophthalmologists about the importance of various preventive measures for eye cancer, that largely affects children. The run would be flagged off by the Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan and Mr Anjani Kumar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad City.

Retinoblastoma is one of the rarer cancers. It mostly affects children below three years of age. Over the past decade, LVPEI has treated more than 2000 patients with retinoblastoma eye cancer.

Over 60 to 65% of these patients cannot afford the treatment and LVPEI subsidizes it at no cost to the poor patient’s family. LVPEI treats 150 to 200 new cases every year, of which 40% are in late stages and 10% are in very late stages.
