Paid evening OP services in Telangana?

Inkeshaf Ahmed
Hyderabad: The Telangana Government is planning to introduce evening Out Patient (OP) services at all its hospitals. The proposal has been mooted by the state medical health and family welfare minister of the state Etela Rajender during a high level review meeting held with the officials of his department.

The minister has reportedly  come up with the idea to serve more number of poor and needy patients of the state visiting the government hospitals. A similar system is already in place at the lone super specialty hospital of the state NIMS (Nizam’s Institute Of Medical Sciences). At the NIMS, the authorities charge Rs.500 as consultation fee from the patients during their evening OPs. The state government is now planning to charge a similar amount during their proposed evening OPs.

According to the officials, the OP services will be launched at all the government owned teaching hospitals of the state in the first phase. Later, it will be introduced at district hospitals and area hospitals of the state. Although a similar proposal was mooted by the state government almost two years back, it was shelved for reasons known to powers that be. Another main objective behind the evening OP idea of the state Government was to prevent all the government doctors from focusing on their private practice. "We will charge consultation fee from the patients visiting our evening OP sessions. The amount so charged will be given to the doctors. This will not only act as an incentive for the doctors but also prompt them to attend the evening OPs on regular basis. This will also prevent them from focusing on their private practice. We are planning to charge Rs.500 from the patients and give Rs.250 to the doctors for their services,” an official of the health department of the state told DTMT.

The official further added that all the other services like conducting clinical investigation tests and admission of the patients at the government hospitals would be free of cost. “We will not charge anything from the patients, except the consultation, in our evening clinics. All other services will be offered free of cost to the patients,” he noted. The idea has also prompted the state government to come up with the idea of a two shift system viz morning shift and evening shift for the doctors and the paramedical staff. The morning shift will begin at 9 am and will end at 12.30 pm. The evening shift will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm. However, some doctors are already opposing the proposals as they stand to lose attractive income at their private clinics during evening times.
