Agitated over brutal assaults on doctors by relatives of patients who die due to alleged negligence, junior doctors in West Bengal have struck work in all government hospitals in the state.
85-year-old Mohammad Shahid had died on June 10, 2019, in NRS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, due to alleged medical negligence. After his death, a mob of 200 people entered the hospital and started attacking doctors. An intern was severely injured in the attack and he sustained head injuries. The doctors were seeking places to hide as the hospital had turned into a battlefield.
Meanwhile, Resident Doctors Association of Delhi-AIIMS has come out in support of doctors of NRS Medical College and demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators of violence.
The AIIMS doctors said that the despicable incident that happened yesterday, which resulted in near fatal injury to an on-duty doctor, is one of the most harrowing acts of hooliganism in a hospital campus in recent times and is beyond verbal condemnation.
“Any knee jerk reaction or further actions by the state, if deemed inappropriate or not commensurate with the amount of seriousness of this incident demands, shall lead to an unprecedented nationwide protest,” warns the RDA letter.
