NRS Medical College-Kolkata: Principal, MS resign

 DTMT Network
KOLKATA : In the wake of the ongoing strike by the resident doctors across West Bengal, the principal and the medical superintendent of the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have tendered their resignations.

The resignation of Professor Saibal Kumar Mukherjee and Professor Saurabh Chattopadhyay, the respective principal and medical superintendent of NRS Medical College, assumes significance as the stir broke out due to an incident which erupted at the hospital administered by them.

In their resignations, they stated that they seek to resign from their respective posts as principal and MS because of their inability to overcome the crisis prevailing at the NRS Medical College and Hospital.

The resignations came after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued an ultimatum to the agitating resident doctors to end their strike and join duty. The chief minister had also said that if they do not comply, then the concerned resident doctors will have to vacate the college hostels.

On June 10, two resident doctors were brutally assaulted by relatives of a deceased patient. The incident led to a strike by resident doctors across West Bengal, demanding that the Mamata government enact immediate measures to protect  doctors.
