A delegation of doctors under the banner of AIIMS-Delhi RDA, led by Dr. Amarinder Singh Malhi, met the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on June 14, 2019, in the context of the assault on doctors in NRS Hospital, Kolkata, and the consequent nationwide strike by doctors.

Dr Harsh Vardhan assured the doctors that he will speak to health ministers of states across the country to immediately put in place security measures in hospitals. In the long term, he assured he will bring legislation to punish those who assault doctors on duty. As for West Bengal, he assured that he will talk the state's Chief Minister to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

The delegation of doctors sought the intervention by the central government to stop, what it called, politically motivated atrocities, on the protesting doctors in West Bengal.

They also wanted uniform security in government hospitals across the country and the enforcement of an entry-exit protocol in government hospitals.

The delegation impressed upon the Health Minister the need to increase the security personnel, both armed and unarmed, in hospitals to three times the present strength. The also wanted armed security in the hostel premises of doctors.

The doctors also told Dr Harsh Vardhan that CCTV in the hospitals must be made mandatory, especially in emergency areas.

The memorandum containing these demands was signed by Dr Malhi, Dr Arun Pandey, Dr Viraj Navrekar and Dr Jawahar Singh.
