The Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, has written to all chief ministers calling upon them to initiate strict action against any person who assaults doctors in the health care institutions.

This was after representatives from the Indian Medical Association and the Delhi Medical Association called on Dr Vardhan on June 15, 2019 and made such a request of Dr Vardhan.

Dr. Vardhan has asked those state governments who do not have laws to protect doctors against assaults to consider enacting such laws immediately.

“State governments that do not have specific legislation to protect doctors and health professionals to consider enacting one immediately,” says the union health minister's letter to the Chief Ministers across India, including to the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
