The Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has finally relented and, as per reports, she has agreed to the demand of the striking doctors to meet them at 4 pm today (Monday) in the presence of the press, which means live coverage of the meeting.

Mamata Banerjee has also agreed to meet a larger delegation of doctors. Clearly, the pressure of the nationwide support for the striking doctors of West Bengal is telling on the West Bengal Chief Minister who is softening her earlier hard line stand.

Not usually known for reconciliation, Ms. Mamata Banerjee will have to use all her tact and diplomatic skills to assuage the hurt feelings of the doctors and will have to use the meeting as a golden opportunity to defuse the crisis. For this, she will have to have a human touch and leave politics behind in the interests of the patients.
